What Is a Mala Necklace?

Malas are beautiful strands of 108 sacred beads that have been used in meditation for millennia by Hindus. Many others are now finding empowerment and enlightenment in these sacred beads.

In Sanskrit, Japa mala literally translates to “prayer beads for spiritual practice.”

Hindus traditionally hold their malas in their right hand and slide their thumb across each bead to count each time a mantra is recited, for a total of 108 times. I like to use them as a gratitude practice. Thinking of 108 things I’m thankful for or blessed with.

What Is the Significance of 108?

Ever wonder why mala necklaces have 108 beads?

The exact meaning of the number 108 is open to interpretation across cultures and disciplines, but there is no denying its significance. Look at where 108 shows up:

• There are 108 Qi energy lines (or meridians) within the body

• In numerology, the number 1 stands for God, 0 is the wholeness of spirit found through enlightenment or non-attachment, and 8 represents infinity.

Mala Necklace Instructions:

  1. Unravel all of the string off the board.
  2. Tie a double knot 4-6 inches away from the end of the string that doesn't have a needle.
  3. Figure out your pattern and intention for making the Mala. Remember that the middle of your necklace is the beginning portion and end portion of it.
  4. Put a bead through the needle and tie a knot. You want to tie the knot as close as you can to the bead.
  5. Continue to put the beads on and tie knots.
  6. Once you have exactly 108 beads on your necklace tie a knot as close a you can to the bead to connect the necklace together.
  7. Put your tassel or guru crystal on and tie a double knot.
  8. Cut excess string off.
  9. Use crazy glue or nail glue to secure knot.
